FAQ Frequently asked questions
About the brand
What kind of brand is BEERBELLY?
BEERBELLY is a brand launched in 2013 by YOUNG Co., Ltd., a leather workshop in Kita-Senju, Tokyo.
Since 1970, YOUNG Co., Ltd. has made and repaired bags and wallets for brands in Japan and abroad, working behind the scenes without its name on the product. At BEERBELLY, we take that craftsman’s perspective into everything from design and engineering to production and communication, making wallets, bags and small leather goods.
Where does the name come from?
It started with opening cans of beer in the workshop after work and talking about making things. From a remark that “the more we make, the bigger our beer bellies grow,” we named the brand BEERBELLY.
Where are your products made? Are they made in Japan?
All BEERBELLY products are made in Japan. YOUNG Co., Ltd., which runs BEERBELLY, has also made all of its products in Japan since its founding in 1970.
Leather and aging
What leathers does BEERBELLY use, and how do they change with use? (aging / patina)
At BEERBELLY, we mainly use the leathers below. The leather differs by color, and it is listed in each product description.
- NY (New York) / M.P.G., Italy: natural grain and a moist, supple feel. A vegetable-tanned leather rich in oil; as you use it, it gains luster and its color deepens.
- Pueblo / Badalassi Carlo, Tuscany, Italy: a vegetable-tanned cowhide. Its surface, with a light, dry feel like Japanese washi paper, turns into a smooth luster with use.
- WARP / an Italian leather: based on vegetable-tanned cowhide from Montana, Italy. A translucent print that lets the base color show through is layered into a camouflage pattern, and a milled crinkle finish gives it a soft look. Where the prints overlap, the color underneath shows through and the layered colors create new shades. The change of the leather itself mixes with the print colors, so its look changes over time.
- Elbamatt / Tempesti, Italy: a soft, springy feel from its rich oil content. Its color and luster deepen with use.
- Minerva Box / Badalassi Carlo, Italy: natural grain and a soft feel. The color deepens and the luster grows with use.
- Liscio / Badalassi Carlo, Italy: a smooth surface. The color deepens and the luster grows with use.
- GIZA / Badalassi Carlo, Italy: Pueblo infused with wax, giving it a moist, rich look. It ages gradually.
- Siena / M.P.G., Italy: translucent color, with shading that appears when the leather is bent.
- Belgian natural leather / Masure: an undyed, simple look and firm body. Its color and luster deepen with use.
- Himeji natural leather / Japan: an unfinished natural leather that feels good to the touch. It shows a truly leather-like aging.
How quickly the leather ages depends on how and where it is used.
Does it need care?
For everyday care, wiping with a soft, dry cloth is enough.
For natural leathers (Belgian natural leather and Himeji natural leather), please replenish the oils with a cream when they start to feel dry.
If you use a cream, first test it in an inconspicuous spot to check for color change or stains, then apply a small amount thinly.
If it gets wet, blot the water with a dry cloth and let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated, shady place. Avoid drying it quickly with a hair dryer or in direct sunlight.
